Further Levelling and Setting Out

This four-day course teaches how to correctly set out using a total station. It is suitable for those with experience in setting out, like engineers or construction managers. Beginners may prefer our three-day introductory course.

Course content

The course includes:

  • How to set out using a total station

  • Establish, check and manage control points

  • Calculate coordinates for setting out

  • Mitigating errors when using a total station

  • View, edit, add and delete data on the total station

  • Total station functions, including resection, occupied point, stake out and reference line

  • Establish a site datum (TBM)

  • Set out profiles to control height

  • How to carry out a full check of setting-out compliance

  • Recording point details ‘as set out’.

Entry requirements

  1. Reasonable level of mobility – must be able to lift and move loads.

  2. Basic understanding of geometry, including falls and gradients, angles, trigonometry, Pythagoras and coordinates

  3. Good spoken and written English.

  4. Valid form of ID. See accepted forms of ID.
