CITB has drawn together evidence from several studies to highlight how young people form views about construction, what influences their career choices, and where the sector faces barriers in attracting new entrants.

Persistent challenges, including limited awareness of the full breadth of roles; negative or outdated perceptions of industry; inconsistent careers guidance; and practical barriers to entering and progressing within the sector, continue to feed the skills shortage and affect retention.

Alongside these challenges, the analysis highlights significant opportunities. Construction offers meaningful work, clear progression pathways and varied roles that match what many young people say they want from a career.

Improving the visibility of these opportunities, strengthening employer engagement in schools and communities, and ensuring accessible pathways into the sector can all help widen the pool of potential entrants.

Next steps

CITB works with government, industry and education providers to improve awareness of construction careers and widen access at every stage, from early years exposure through to adult retraining.

Building on this broader body of work, CITB has recently deepened its understanding of how social class shapes young people’s career choices, the role employers can play in opening up opportunities, and how social media influences career awareness and aspiration.

This insight supports CITB’s ongoing commitment to raising the profile of construction, improving the quality of careers information, and ensuring people from all backgrounds can access fulfilling careers in the industry.
